Nicholas Winton, a British stockbroker, organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia in 1938-1939, just before the outbreak of World War II. He arranged for their safe passage to Britain, where they were taken in by foster families. Winton's actions are widely credited with saving the lives of these children, and he became known as the "British Schindler." He was knighted in 2003 for his humanitarian efforts.
