Galtieri & the Falklands War

Leopoldo Galtieri, the leader of Argentina's military junta, played a key role in the Falklands War of 1982. In an attempt to boost his popularity and distract from Argentina's struggling economy, Galtieri ordered the invasion of the British-held Falkland Islands in April 1982. The invasion initially succeeded, but Britain responded by sending a naval task force to retake the islands. After a brief but intense conflict, Argentina surrendered in June 1982. The war was a humiliating defeat for Galtieri and his junta, and it led to their downfall later that year. The war also had a significant impact on British politics, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1990.
