Saigo Takamori, known as "The Last Samurai," was a legendary figure in Japanese history. A skilled swordsman and charismatic leader, he fought against the Meiji Restoration and its modernization efforts. Saigo believed in the traditional values of samurai honor and loyalty, and he clashed with the new Western-influenced government. After leading the Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji forces, Saigo was defeated and committed ritual suicide in 1877. His death marked the end of the samurai era and the beginning of a new Japan.
