2 billion years ago, the Earth was a vastly different planet. The continents were arranged in a single supercontinent called Rodinia, and the atmosphere was much thinner and contained far less oxygen. The climate was also much hotter, with average global temperatures around 50 degrees Celsius. Life on Earth was limited to single-celled organisms, such as bacteria and algae, and there was no evidence of any complex multicellular life. The Earth's surface was also much more dynamic, with frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
