The Story of the Maliseet's Fight for Survival From the British

The Maliseet people, an indigenous tribe residing in the Wabanaki Confederacy, faced a formidable struggle for survival against the British colonial forces during the 18th century. Their ancestral lands, encompassing present-day New Brunswick, Maine, and Nova Scotia, became a battleground as the British encroached upon their territory, seeking control over the lucrative fur trade and expansion of their settlements. The Maliseet, fiercely defending their way of life and sovereignty, engaged in a series of conflicts, including the Maliseet War of 1723 and Father Le Loutre's War. Despite their bravery and resilience, the Maliseet faced overwhelming odds against the British military and were eventually forced to sign peace treaties, leading to the loss of vast tracts of their traditional lands and the imposition of British authority.
