Baldwin IV, known as Baldwin the Leper or the Leper King, ascended to the throne of Jerusalem in 1174 at the tender age of 13. Despite being afflicted with the debilitating disease of leprosy, which gradually disfigured his body and weakened his strength, Baldwin exhibited exceptional courage and leadership. As king, he defended his kingdom against invading Muslim armies, notably at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177. Baldwin's wisdom and determination allowed him to rally his forces and secure victories, earning the respect of both his Christian allies and Muslim adversaries. Despite his physical suffering, Baldwin ruled with dignity and compassion, becoming a symbol of strength and resilience amidst adversity.
