Climate Change: Europe's Melting Glaciers

Europe's glaciers are rapidly melting due to the effects of climate change. The Alps, Pyrenees, and Caucasus mountains have all seen significant reductions in glacier size in recent decades. For example, the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland, the largest glacier in the Alps, has lost over 1,000 feet of thickness since 1850. This melting is causing a number of problems, including increased flooding, water shortages, and habitat loss for wildlife. Additionally, the melting of glaciers is contributing to sea level rise, which is a major threat to coastal communities around the world.
